CN Talent Awards

We are pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted in the Construction News Talent awards 2019 in two categories! The Construction News Talent awards are designed to recognise the people striving to make it a more inclusive industry, as well as the businesses doing outstanding work to improve the construction industry’s reputation and employment practices.

Associate Director, Emma MacLeod has been nominated for the Inspire Me Award

The Inspire me Award aims to recognise individuals who inspire women that already work in the construction industry so that they may attain leadership roles.

Emma is an enthusiastic engineer with an eye for detail, who has over 15 years of experience within the engineering industry and holds a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, from Strathclyde University. Emma began her career at Hurley Palmer Flatt with a summer placement where she has since grown her career, recently being promoted to Associate Director. Emma began her career at Hurley Palmer Flatt with a summer placement where she has since grown her career, recently being promoted to Associate Director. She has worked in both the public and private sector, covering various areas including commercial offices, education, healthcare, hotel & leisure, transport, retail energy and compliance.

She has been an active mentor to several engineers within Hurley Palmer Flatt through the GATES programme (Graduates and Training Engineering Solutions) and Gifted & Talented Framework. Emma has a vast amount of experience to share with other engineers and thinks it’s really rewarding to disseminate this knowledge, helping others to progress in their own careers. She believes it is important to support others through mentoring and advocates participation at all levels on industry committees.

Emma has been both surprised and delighted with her career developments following her return to work after starting a family, with these additional home responsibilities only further motivating her to succeed in her career. Emma has harnessed the energy and dedication she has always given to everything she does, but with a new determination. She hopes that her experience and support she has been afforded by her employer would encourage more people to return to industry following a break and to have a greater confidence in doing this. She states, “too often we hear stories of people taking a career break or maternity leave and losing confidence but with the support of a great employer and the right attitude there is no reason why everyone cannot return and thrive!”.

Graduate Engineer, Waqar Ahmed has been nominated for Graduate of the Year

The Graduate of the Year Award recognises graduates working in the construction industry who have made a tangible difference to their business.

Having started his studies in Pakistan, Waqar moved to the UK in 2015 to study at the University of Surrey, where he successfully completed BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering (1st class Honours) and a MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering from Cranfield University in 2016 (Merit). Waqar joined our Mechanical & Engineering team as a Graduate though our GATES Scheme, a program that supports graduates through professional mentorship and reporting to target professional registration as chartered engineers.

Waqar is a representation of the bright and forward-thinking generation that will meet the challenges we face in this era of digital revolution. He is a talented asset to our team and his experience and extended exposure in the industry has made him a proficient user of IES, Hevacomp, and AutoCAD. Waqar’s knowledge has impacted key projects in several industries such as education, commercial, residential and data centre projects over the past year. From his time in the GATES scheme, Waqar has developed an IES model for Focus School where his personal approach has empowered him to lead on mechanical aspects of design. He has also developed an IES model for an UPS/MER room in a commercial £2.5m project, showing proficiency and understanding of complex systems. Waqar’s performance on projects and his commitment to the GATES program was recognised at the 2018 Hurley Palmer Flatt Group’s Annual Staff Conference where he was awarded with Graduate of the Year award by CEO Paul Flatt.

Good luck to everyone nominated, we look forward to meeting the winners in November at City Central at the Honourable Artillery Company.
