A healing centre for the New Forest

The Lymington New Forest Hospital will provide a purpose-built modern healthcare facility that will meet the secondary healthcare needs of the New Forest population while consolidating hospital services onto one site.

hurleypalmerflatt is responsible for the mechanical, electrical and IT services at the hospital, which will provide two operating theatres, a mortuary, a Medical Imaging department, 100 long-stay beds and a minor treatment out-patients department.

The building services solutions we created enhance the architectural quality and are founded on sustainable, energy efficiency and effective waste management principles. They minimise carbon emissions and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Natural resources are harnessed especially in relation to natural ventilation and natural daylight, solar gain is controlled through shading and heating is managed through adjustable thermostats in every room and ward. Where possible, materials with low embodied energy and long life spans have been specified.

Where mechanical solutions are required, their impact is minimised. Low energy lighting is controlled by automation, there is minimal water storage, night time cooling is used, durable equipment is incorporated and low energy boiler plant has been sourced. The power within the hospital is backed up ensuring there is resilience in the event of failure, which is critical in a hospital environment.

The application of Dynamic Thermal Modelling and Computational Fluid Dynamics, which have tested the solutions we have created, demonstrate the benefits that will be realised on completion of the building.
