The Media Campus at New Horizons Court in Brentford is a stunning shop front for BSkyB and provides it with a modern and flexible environment for executives, administrative staff and specialised production teams.

The 150,000 sq ft scheme, for which we provided the mechanical & electrical engineering, involved the complete refurbishment of four existing buildings, re-using and recycling them as they approach the end of their life-cycle.

The brief from BSkyB was simple - to deliver 'light, bright and airy' spaces. An improved internal environment was created with flexible, open-plan spaces and 100 modular pods to be used as offices or meeting areas. All services distribution is contained within a bulkhead running through the perimeter of each building and a serviced trunk plugs into the open-plan chilled beams or the pod chilled beams, delivering the freedom to relocate the 100 modular pods anywhere in the building.

Energy efficiency was at the heart of the building services design. We liaised closely with BSkyB's in-house sustainability team to put in place an environmental policy and integrate a number of energy management and building management systems. These included full fresh air ventilation with 80% efficient heat recovery, free cooling chillers, active chilled beams, condensing gas fired boilers and direct digital lighting control. All of these solutions minimised energy usage and maintenance while optimising comfort levels for BSkyB's staff.

On this project, we worked within a tight budget proving that good engineering need not be expensive.
