Paul Flatt speaks on the Power and Cooling Challenge in Las Vegas

On the 30th November 2006, Paul Flatt, Group MD, spoke at the Gartner Conference in Las Vegas, on behalf of Barclays Capital. Paul presented the client's data centre issues regarding power, real estate, maintenance and high density cooling. Going forward, BarCap's data centre strategy would now focus on several key elements:

  • Build design between Tier III and Tier IV
  • More scientific analysis of individual cabinet loads (v. overall Watts/sq ft)
  • Plant segregation from IT data equipment
  • Use of UPS N+N as 2(N+1) (Hybrid rotary)
  • Standby generati0n N+1
  • Cooling N+N as 2(N+1)
  • Diverse mains electrical supplies at high voltage

Through specific use of high density cabinets and design optimisation, Paul concluded that "Pay as you grow" was essential to ensure continual maximum utilisation, as well as a "plug and play" approach to provide forward infrastructure utilising multiple rack sizes.
